The intended scope of Cityworks is to manage the assets both during the constuction and then the operational maintenance of the road corridor once built. Additionally all Thiess survey equipment nationally used on all Thiess projects will also be managed by Cityworks. Being an ArcGIS centric Works Maintenance system, Cityworks is easily integrated into all GIS operations at Thiess and in doing so maintaining Thiess's national Asset Inventory. The resulting GIS has multiple coverages created and maintained in ESRI ArcInfo and ArcView. Cityworks is used to manage the relevant data, maintenance history and work order process for each feature in the network. In addition, there are a variety of other departments that benefit from Cityworks capabilities. Since Cityworks was implemented in the spring of 2000 over 40,000 work orders have been generated. Over 98% of these work orders are attached to a feature inside the GIS; this benefit has been appreciated numerous times. In the summer of 2001 Waterford experienced a large number of power failures that affected many sewer lift stations and water treatment plants. Using Cityworks, work orders were created for each lift station and treatment plant. A report was then generated that detailed all costs incurred from the power failures. Both divisions using Cityworks have been able to increase efficiency and reduce paperwork. For example, the Line Maintenance Division has used Cityworks to streamline their customer response process and reporting. Before the implementation of Cityworks the Line Maintenance division was using paper to keep track of the open calls for a day, an Access database to track the customer complaints and another 3rd party software package to track their fleet equipment cost and information. Once Cityworks was implemented they were able to combine all of these elements and more into a single location. Now, they can take their customer requests in the same place that they track open calls, record work orders and track the cost of their fleet when used for work orders.
