Wagga Wagga City Council

Dekho - Internet Mapping 

Background
Wagga Wagga City Council, NSW's largest inland city, embarked on an extensive "Online Services Strategy" to reduce red tape for business and citizens an in doing so encourage economic development. The Online Service Strategy resulted in a number of "e" internet initiatives, one of which was for a comprehensive internet mapping system.

Situation
The Council has a mature GIS capability including ESRI Australia's EView solution. When EView reached the end of its development lifecycle, a new solution was proposed to deliver the Internet Mapping System. This system was to be ESRI Australia's new web mapping solution, Dekho.  

Vision
The vision for Dekho is to provide a comprehensive internet mapping solution, providing multiple web mapping clients to meet a wide range of external users from casual mapping enquires, similar to Google Maps throughout Council's general website, through to more advanced e-commerce web mapping applications integrated to Councils other online service initiatives, and finally a feature rich web mapping application.

Solution
gViz was engaged by Council to address key performance and architectural issues with the existing internet ArcGIS Server solution. ESRI Australia, was also used to install Dekho capabilities and provide generic Dekho training.

gViz then continued its work with Council to configure the Dekho capabilities to meet Council's needs. This involved two basic phases.

Phase 1 - was to deploy the feature rich web mapping client, with a range of mapping, printing and query capabilities aligned to Council's business units and accessing Council's internal systems.

Phase 2 - then was to deploy a series of advanced reporting options integrating Council information and in doing so provide users access to corporate information for any location in the Local Government Area. This includes a range of Property and Planning information reports leveraged from the system.

Additionally Dekho was integrated to Council's other e-commerce applications providing spatial context to people and business's looking to do business with Council.

Thirdly, Council's general website was provided a simple consumer mapping application, similar to Google Maps, so that people could see spatially a range of Council services, facilities and events within Council website.

gViz also provided complete system administration documentation of the Dekho and ESRI technology system with a thorough series of Knowledge Transfer sessions for Council to then manage and maintain the site.
